As parents, it is always a blessing to hear ideas of what has worked for other parents in discipling their children. The articles that Sheila shared have been a blessing to me in thinking about what I need to be working on teaching Titus as he is beginning to understand many new concepts. I would like to share some specific resources that I have been using with Titus over the last few months that I really love!
A while back, a friend of mine told me about the company, Tiny Theologians. Their goal is to “offer training tools that will help parents and children’s ministries pass on the Christian faith. Covering topics like theology, church history, missions, and discipleship, we pray these tools are a blessing as you seek to train the tiny theologians in your life.” (See Tiny Theologians’ About page.)
Tiny Theologians offers a growing number of flashcards that are perfect for family worship time. Currently, there are 17 choices that include the armor of God, the ABCs of Theology, Big Words of The Bible, and Christ at the Center. The target age group is 2-14 years old, but I started using them with Titus at 15 months. They have also just released a free (for a limited time!) resource for making the ABC cards into a semester long homeschool Bible curriculum.
I have been very encouraged to see their commitment to sound theology. How often do you find a statement of faith for a non-denominational company writing children’s resources? There have been many other children’s Bible books that I initially liked but have later been very disappointed when I found out the theological beliefs of the authors. Amy and Austin Gannett, the founders, also have a blog on the website that discusses parenting and teaching your children to worship. It is very important to make sure that the children’s resources and Bible-based books that we are using are not teaching a moral gospel or communicating that we are the center of the story of the Bible. Christ is the center of God’s story!
Over the last couple of months, Titus and I have been going through the ABCs of God’s Attributes flashcard set. Although the concepts are still big for him, it has been amazing to see how he has begun to learn the words already. The verses are written on the back of the cards, but I make sure to read them out of my Bible and tell him that all the words in the Bible are true because they are God’s words. I also condensed the information on the back down to one short sentence so that when we review them, I tell him what the letter is, what it stands for, and the short summary. For example, A is for All-knowing…God knows everything!
Titus’ favorite card is the H is for Holy. We have started singing Holy, Holy, Holy together whenever we get to it. Seeing him learning and remembering is very motivating to continue discipling him, even at this young age! Recently, I praised him for being kind, and he immediately said, “Kind?” in the same way that we say it when we are reviewing K is for Kind. The connections are beginning to be made in his mind between his actions and God’s character.
One of the other sets that I am looking forward to using in the future is the Christ at the Center cards. They present a summary of the content of each book of the Bible and show how Christ is the center of each one. “The aim of these cards is to help kids (and parents!) discover the Savior who is on every page of Scripture – Jesus, the promised Savior of Genesis and coming King of Revelation. This tool aims to help kids learn to see Christ as the center of God’s Word, while also learning about things like biblical genre, authorship, and more.” (See the product description.)
Deuteronomy 4 reminds us of the vital importance of teaching our children to fear the Lord and love His Word. “Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons. Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Assemble the people to Me, that I may let them hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’” (Deuteronomy 4:9-10, NASB)
It is the God-given privilege of parents to disciple the hearts of their children, and it is very important to use resources that teach solid theology. Tiny Theologians is a very good option for helping parents fulfill this job!
